ABOUT
Palama Settlement played a pivotal role in the birth and development of Kajukenbo, leaving a lasting impact on the martial art. Located in the turbulent Palama area of Honolulu, it was here that the five founding members of Kajukenbo, Adriano Emperado, Joseph Holck, Peter Choo, Frank Ordonez, and Clarence Chang, came together in the late 1940s with the shared goal of creating a practical and effective street-fighting system. The harsh environment of Palama Settlement fueled their determination to develop an art that could withstand real-life aggression. Under the guidance of Adriano Emperado and through rigorous practice and experimentation, Kajukenbo was born. The lessons learned at Palama Settlement instilled a self-defense focus in the art, as well as the core values of courage, pragmatism, and adaptability. This unique blend of martial arts and principles laid the foundation for Kajukenbo's success and growth beyond the walls of Palama Settlement, leaving a lasting impact on the art's philosophy and techniques.
Established in 1896, Palama Settlement is a non-profit, community-based social service agency serving the Kalihi and Palama neighborhoods offering a wide range of educational, recreational, athletic, cultural, social, health, and community building programs and services for children, youth, adults, and senior citizens.
