His martial arts journey began in 1974, under the guidance of his father, following a significant event in school that led him to the path of Kajukenbo.
Clyde Villanueva Mandac Sr. embodies the spirit of Kajukenbo, drawing strength from his family's deep roots in the martial arts. His journey is a testament to the values of humility, respect, and dedication, as he carries forward the legacy of his father, SGM Henry Mandac, and the martial arts tradition of Palama Settlement. Clyde's influence on his students and the martial arts community at large is characterized by simplicity, effectiveness, and a commitment to preserving the roots of Kajukenbo. His aspiration is to be remembered as a devoted student and a kind, respectful, and humble individual, much like his father before him.
History
Growing up in a martial arts-oriented environment, Clyde's family history was deeply intertwined with Kajukenbo. His parents met at Palama Settlement, where notable figures like Sijo Adriano Emperado, SGM Dechi Emperado, and co-creator Frank Ordonez shared stories of martial arts and its significance.
Clyde's lineage is firmly anchored in the original knowledge passed down from Palama Settlement, with SGM Henry Mandac serving as the bridge between Clyde and Sijo Emperado. Notably, his uncles, including GGM Sid Asuncion, GGM Aleju Reyes, and GGM Victor Gascon, also played pivotal roles in shaping his martial arts heritage.
Throughout his journey, Clyde was fortunate to learn from influential teachers and mentors, including SGM Clarence Luna, SGM Al Dacascos, SGM Al Dela Cruz, and GM John Pascua.
In the year 2000, Clyde achieved a significant milestone by earning his black belt. This achievement was further solidified in 2010 when he attained the rank of 5th-degree black belt, and in 2019 he was awarded his 9th-degree by his father SGM Henry Mandac.
One of the most significant experiences in Clyde's Kajukenbo journey has been performing on stage for Sijo Emperado over the years, including at Sijo's funeral. The guidance and mentorship of SGM Dechi Emperado, who treated him like a son, have left an indelible mark.
Clyde was honored to teach at the first Kajukenbo "Back to the Roots" - Kenpo Karate Branch and was part of video tapings at Palama Settlement to preserve the roots of Kajukenbo.
He has participated in forms competitions at Wahiawa Gym and has conducted seminars at various KSDI events, particularly in Las Vegas, further sharing his knowledge and expertise.
As a lifetime member of KSDI worldwide, Clyde is recognized for his dedication to the art and his contributions to its growth. He has also trained and promoted notable students, including his daughter, Sibak Zeren Mandac, and Sibak Louis Calimpong.
In his teaching, Clyde emphasizes principles such as footwork, breathing, respect, humility, and mental discipline. He has contributed to the Kajukenbo community by fostering friendship, respect, and support among practitioners.
