Hello: I am curious, do Kajukenbo stylists study the applications for the movements/techniques that are in the Palama Sets? I am an Okinawan stylist, and Kata (forms) are heavily stressed, and we spend quite a bit of time studying the Bunkai (breakdown) of the movements.

I know in the more progressive styles, they have basically squeezed the forms out of their systems. it seems to me (as an outside observer) that Kajukenbo is kind of in the middle, containing a progressive self defense system, but retaining some tradition in the forms.

I watched Prof. Bishops great videos on youtube in regards to the Kaju principles. At one point he mentioned that a movement was ok for a form, but not practical in self defense (I think it was chanbering the fist). So what are the perceived value of the sets for you guys?

Do they have value as a part of the past, and are practiced for ways to improve balance, and movement etc? Or do you break them down and study the techniques in them for practical applications...Thanks. Huh

Hi
As in Okinawa-Te, Kajukenbo roots taught kata as form for self-defense. The Pinans as the forms were called then, were as in any Martial Art a way of improving, one's techniques or the Body. Not only thru repetition, but thru the mental combat of the Mind. Enlighting the Spirit, if you may, by the sheer satisfaction of doing the form correctly. So when doing forms, a Kajukenbo Student would percieve themselves in a combat arena, with multiple attackers, and every vital point struck not hap hazardly but to the point, with the correct weapon of deadly force. Hence It (forms) or performance of the form, is definitelly an important area of Kajukenbo Self Defense knowledge. So those of the Kajukenbo lineage would also take "Pride"  in that every move, has a reason. And all stances will remain strong. And the concentration level will be elevated. By all who practice it.

Isshinryu-guy,

Where many martial arts styles keep or even hide their techniques within their forms and the student must learn the techniques from the forms, Kajukenbo is unique in that we have established techniuqes for attacks such as grab attacks, punch attacks, knife and club attacks and multiple person attacks. In total their are around 100 established or set techniques the student will learn besides the techniques that are contained within their forms.

As far as applications, those vary depending on the teacher's level of understanding of the forms and their training background. Some teachers see all the movements as block, strikes and kicks, while others use to same movements but find locks, traps, and control holds.

Kinda makes you wonder if the Kajukenbo Founders knew just how ahead-of-their-times they really were.
